I'm kind of bummed that Blaze only did a few historicals because the ones I've read have all been winners for me This tale of an independent widow and a prince's hanger on is an unusual and rather fun Victorian tale Mariah Eller inherited an inn from her much older husband and when a party of noblemen intent on debauchery show up she gets called into action to keep her property from getting trashed As it turns out the group in uestion consists of the rather notorious Prince of Wales and his circle of hangers on Mariah's bravado so impresses the Prince that he makes known his wish for Mariah to be his next mistress There is one catch though she must be married because the Prince does not dally with unmarried women I know this might sound contrived but this uirk is actually documented historically What a great plot bunny for a romance novelist right? So Jack St Lawrence gets tasked with convincing Mariah to accept one of the eligible suitors on the Prince's list The problem? Mariah has a mind of her own and enough sense to know that once the affair is over she will be stuck with whomever she marries Mariah insists on inspecting her prospects in person which takes her and Jack on uite the journeyAlong the way we learn that while her first husband may not have been a love match Mariah enjoyed uite the passionate marriage with him She is forthright about herself and what she wants and I rather liked her Jack is a likable guy too He may do some uestionable things in the Prince's company but he's grounded than the rest of his circle and watching his reserve crack was entertaining indeed My one uibble view spoilerAt one point Mariah is talking about her sexual awakening with her husband and mention is made of how he basically learned all his tricks while in India And of course the old Kama Sutra as sex manual gets trotted out I know this book was written a while ago but that stuff still jerks me right out of a story at least for a bit hide spoiler

HmmmThis was a nice respite from the otherwise generic HR template with a feisty head strong determined heroine and a little meeker hero providing uite a breatherBut such characterization is also the biggest problem in this book at least for me The heroine was a bit too feisty IMO almost flirting with brazenness and a tad of slutty ness while the hero's somewhat lovable trait of shyness was a bit overdone for meI guess I'm not used to such characters in historical romances They provided a nice twist but came off as slightly over the topI liked the uick and easy resolution to the big problem but still it was a tad too easyA good story nevertheless

Say it ain't so Joe Say it ain't soIt's so kid Betina Krahn has jumped the shark This is a Victorian but THE LAST BACHELOR was 1000 times better That's the last time BK really put it together and created a lovely masterpiece And that's what 20 years ago?Say it ain't so Joe Say it ain't so

Story took place 1887 in England The married Prince of Wales preferred to have sexualencounters with married women only in case of a happy event He met wanted badly widowed beauty Mariah an innkeeper He arranged for her to meet 4 potential grooms and to wed one of these men inside of 2 weeks The Prince's friend Jack was ordered to escort the beauty w her maid to meet the 4 men It was fun to watch the starchy hero slowly fall in love with the 'vital beauty with the vibrant wit'

I think my reaction to this book has to do with my being saturated in romance novels for a good year and a half and finally getting kind of tired of them But this shouldn't be taken as a reflection of THIS particular novelThis novel is actually well written and the story is interesting and uniueHOWEVER after really gorging on romances this last year I think I finally hit a wall I'm finally sick of romances At least temporarily I've been reading Megan Hart lately and she has such a realistic tone to her novels Her characters usually react in a logical mannerI think it has soured me on the standard romance genreI immediately started feeling thatugh not THIS feeling when I realized that the heroine was being FORCED into a situation that was not of her making not her fault at all The heroine a widowed owner of a country inn captured the notice of the Prince who decided he had to have her as his personal mistress But only after she married because he didn't want any bastard children running around So the heroine then had to find a husband who oh yeah wouldn't mind handing his wife over to the prince's uses for a few years until he got sick of herYUCK The hero participated in this madness by being instrumental in helping her to find a husband Of course the storyline plays out differently hh fall in love la la everyone is happy But the SITUATION is what soured me More often than not these romances feature a situation that just sours my stomach

I really love how Krahn stays true to the times she writes about The storyline here was uniue and though a bit uncomfortable at times I was impressed overall The heroine was refreshing Though she was backed into a corner she really did her best to make the situation work for her The hero seemed like a stick in the mud but watching his passion come unleashed was worth the wait

The long review on the Dear Author website basically says it all for me too You can find it at'm no fan of Harleuin but this was a good read and Betina Krahn was in great form with her wit and insight

uick and dirty historical from Harleuin Blaze I liked the heroine actually but I'm getting burnt out on regency in general Not that I could put this one down I'd definitely read another Betina Krahn

this was suprisingly good it had a good story and alot of twists i found the princes behaviour at the end to be unlikely but it made for a good ending The heroine was a refreshing change form the usualy prototype and even the hero was atypical

Mariah Eller was only trying to save her inn from being trashed So how did the widow manage to attract the unwanted and erotic attention of the Prince of Wales? Not that being desired by royalty is necessarily bad Only I'm kind of bummed that Blaze only did a few historicals because the ones I've read have all been winners for me This tale of an independent widow and a prince's hanger on is an unusual and rather fun Victorian tale Mariah Eller inherited an inn from her much older husband and when a party of noblemen intent on debauchery show up she gets called into action to keep her property from getting trashed As it turns out the group in uestion consists of the rather notorious Prince of Wales and his circle of hangers on Mariah's bravado so impresses the Prince that he makes known his wish for Mariah to be his next mistress There is one catch though she must be married because the Prince does not dally with unmarried women I know this might sound contrived but this uirk is actually documented historically What a great plot bunny for a romance novelist right? So Jack St Lawrence gets tasked with convincing Mariah to accept one of the eligible suitors on the Prince's list The problem?
