This month Jan 2021 are spoiling Prime members with TWO free newly published books This was one of the two I chose This book contains some interesting ideas but delivers them rather poorly Both the main protagonists are female and deliver their stories in the first person not a style I appreciate and with very little differentiation between their 'voices' Both had difficult teen experiences with local boys not a lot of differentiation Honestly for the first 30 40% of the book I really couldn't follow what was supposed to be happening Jori's boyfriend disappeared without trace on the night of the school prom and he and his family were never seen again Her cousin was shot by a man who has just been released from prison Tegan sorry but seriously is nobody called Jenny or Tina any ? Where do this crazy names come from is a police officer with the local force Between them the two women suspect links between the family disappearance and the killing of the cousin and later of his killer This rambles about all over the place Occasional hints of the sultry bayou south are soon washed away in the general 'blergh ness' of the story Family and friends can't be trusted Drugs might be at the heart of the problem but then again they might not Did I care? Not so much The ending is ludicrous and relies on special semi magical powers that have barely been mentioned and never demonstrated until the moment they are needed You also have to uestion whether even the dumbest of criminals in the 21st century doesn't know that mobile phones can be tracked Good effort but poorly delivered

Another great read by this author a thriller that has you wondering who did it until the end Small towns have plenty of secrets and there's plenty in this story Can a newbie cop and a woman home to help her grandma and brother figure out what happened to a convicted killer and a family's disappearance years ago? So much going on and lots of surprises until the very end If you love a good thriller then you'll love this

With one mystery after another cropping up in a small community in southern Alabama there is much uncertainty in this compelling story cleverly written by Debbie Herbert The author has a knack for taking the reader on a journey of uncovering clues and then trying to determine if the information if fact or fiction In NOT ONE OF US the unknowns just keep mounting and I repeatedly tried to decide if assumed connections would end up being verified or proven false By the time the book was finished I had experienced a multitude of emotions and lived through some harrowing situations with the main characters When Jori Trahern was in high school her boyfriend disappeared one night and was never heard from again She eventually left the bayou area of Alabama and moved away making her home in Mobile yet she did occasionally come back to visit her grandmother and younger brother who has autism But when the elderly woman is not doing well Jori come back to assist her two closest relatives While there to decide about their care she learns some details that might finally disclose the truth of what really happened to her boyfriend plus the long ago killing of one of her family members After another crime takes place in the present Jori wants answers and so does a local police officer who feels the need to prove herself As I continued reading NOT ONE OF US my guesses as to what had actually transpired in the past as well as the current happenings kept changing with every new fact that was exposed Just when I thought I had an incident figured out the author would toss in a new belief which left me even stumped There are certainly a lot of unexpected turns occurring and each one added to my interest because of the increasing intrigue The story is told from multiple viewpoints letting me know what was in the minds of several individuals concerning the same set of circumstances Also some past events are depicted when they took place showing me the truth about these episodes

Murder in living colorSynesthesia provides an intriguing twist to this sordid murder mystery in a sordid townThis is one of those stories with a small southern town full of what seems to be a disproportionate number of not very nice people aka southern gothic Thankfully the protagonists Jori a young woman whose boyfriend was murdered on the night of her prom 13 years earlier and Teagan a young cop who's trying to move forward and leave her past behind are sympatheticThe bare bones of the plot isn't that original but incorporated into it is the fact that Jori has synesthesia she can see sound as colors I had a friend years ago who had that; it sounds freaky but fascinating So it's obvious that somehow this ability will play into the mystery and it doesThe author does a great job at building up the tension and suspense until the moment when the killer is revealed Everything coordinates to move the story forward letting out just enough information to keep you surprised keep it progressing to the point that the mystery is solved and there are several smaller twists added on after that By the time the killer's identity is discovered I was on the edge of my seat for nearly the rest of the book The explication was good though not uite as solid as diehard mystery lovers might wish The ending is a little melancholy but still positive hopeful overall a well done mysteryPotential content issuesA fair amount of sleeping around but told in the abstract A character remembers being raped in a flashback scene details are limited to the essential minimally graphicLanguage is moderate 34 d mns about 4 dozen h lls 14 sh ts 4 f bombs
