A lovely end to a series of books written with truth Gervase is clearly a respectable man and every inch patient His colleagues line of work and little jobs he had to do certainly showed his patience respect and good humour I have read this series in just a few short months I have also read the little village school series which is where I first came upon this amazing writer and author I am now awaiting the third book of his newest series about the school at the top of the dale which so far I have to say is my ultimate favourite I do feel Tom is very much like Gervase and I hope he too gets his happily ever after One last thing I would like to say is that I love how he has used character names out of this series and implemented them in his fiction books he has also used similar personalities for certain people I feel David and would have got on a house on fire with the doctors house keeper out of the little village school I feel certain that Gervase is a very brilliant writer

This is a very welcome return to the Yorkshire Dales and the people both young and old who inhabit them This book is imbued with the love laughter hardship tears and honesty that his previous books have been filled withMester Phinn is a very good story teller and has an easy style about his writing The love he has for the people and places he writes about is thee for all to see The characters and characterisations are as colourful and fulsome as in his previous outingsThis book is a wonderful way to spend a pleasant few hours after a hard day at work or just a good book to become lost in at any time of the dayThe ending has the feeling of the last in the series although there are one or two 'loose ends' that could do with being tied up in at least one book I for one would be than happy is another in the series was to come along in the not too distant futureFinally how about a TV series based on the series If done properly and with due respect to the books then it could be a sure fire winnerVery much recommended to young and old Guaranteed to have you laughing and crying with the best of them sometimes at the same time

This is the fifth installment of Gervase Phinn's Dales series and we find ourselves in familiar territory Wicked Mrs Savage caustic Connie beautiful Christine and the usual suspects in the Inspectors officeCuriously as mentioned in other reviews the anecdotes appear a little forced That doesn't mean they aren't funny but some of the subject matter didn't uite sit rightIt's a testament to the writing style that the time period of the story isn't obvious There are no mentions of brands of cars foods etc which means that this could have happened any time That's one of the most enjoyable aspects of the seriesWhile there are the usual set pieces there was less continuity than in previous books but the sheer pleasure from reading about the kids is enough to give this 4 stars

Gervase has a gain written a beautiful book Continuing his excellent description of the Yorkshire Dales through his experiences as a school inspector The observation of the people and their dialect made me feel as if I was thereat the time The is imbued with the love laughter hardship tears and honesty which his other books also portrayedI was fortunate to hear Gervase speak whilst on a cruise and he is a natural speaker and had myself and the rest of the audience laughing at some of the tales he told all of which are written about somewhere in his books
