I have written it a few times as a rule I dislike writing here on Goodreads about books that have disappointed bored or annoyed me There are too many of them and most of the time I don't even bother finishing them But this novel has actually infuriated me a great deal it deserves to be trashed and I'll happily do it Maybe what has me so angry is that this book won the most prestigious literary prize in France when really all it deserves is to end up in a trashcan The concept in itself had me interested though the heroine is Zelda Fitzgerald and the whole book is narrated by her Interesting idea right? It is a novel not a biography and I actually like the idea of taking an almost contemporary character and tell his or her story through fiction Many writers do it with ancient historical figures after all And Zelda is a fascinating and complex woman whose life at the same time glorious brilliant pathetic and heartbreaking is worth a great novel The problem is Leroy is a not only a bad writer his style is horrendous botched if not simply ugly at some points but his approach to the story and the character is completely misgiving when not stupid Anyone who knows about the life of the Fitzgeralds can only be bluntly very pissed by this book Really The psychology is off huge and major parts of Zelda's life disappear all the characters are reduced to caricatures the environment so important to who those people were and how they lived is non existent all the chapters that take place in Alabama for example could take place in some dreary little French suburb you'd be hard pressed to see a difference reality is distorted in a way that gives a bad name to fiction the dialogues are often ridicule and some scenes such as the supposedly erotic ones are just risible I was so shocked by how bad this novel is and by how well it seems to have been received by at least some part of the French literary establishment that it left me speechless for a while I'll applaud any writer who dares write a novel about a real character as long as his work allows us to understand in a better way who he's writing about McCann has done that brilliantly with Dancer about Nureiev or Echenoz with his Ravel those are truly wonderful books Leroy's sad underachievement is an insult not only to Zelda Fitzgerald but also to the reader A decent writing style could at least have saved his enterprise But it isn't to be found here

This book is about Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald A lot has been written about this famous couple One could make a thorough study into both of them and still be amazed and shocked So what did the French author Leroy do? Did he come up with new insights? Does he show a new light on all the facts that are known today? Well he decided to write a novel about the Fitzgeralds written from Zelda's point of view based on 'some' facts but for the main part fictionalised Does that make sense? Yes and no Yes of course one can write a juicy book about them but why not stick to the facts? Why would one make up a story about Zelda's many retreats in mental hospitals when it is known that entire conversations with her psychiatrist are in print? So although the story is heartrending enough as it is the novel left me dissatisfied to some extent If you really want to get a thorough picture of their life together or apart I guess you'd better stick to 'real' biographies Also when you don't have any knowledge about the Fitzgeralds this is not the best introduction to them

Once upon a time in my teenage I read about a very interesting young writer called Zelda She was very talented very rich and very beautiful that she became Miss Alabama She fell deeply in love with a fellow writer and they got married But unfortunately he was one hell of a big narcissist who treated her like shit; he insulted her he mocked her he isolated her and he stole some of her literary text She ended up dying in an institution before she turns fifty This asshole's name was F Scott Fitzgerald And that ladies and gentlemen is why I hate The Great Scotty since I was fifteen I am glad I found this novel by chance a couple of months ago First novel I read by Gilles Leroy and definitely won't be the last

Excellent book for those who are FScott Fitzgerald fans LeRoy gives us a fictional insight to the life of Fitzgerald's wife Zelda Sayre Her trials of being one of the hottest couple defining the 1920's and the tribulations of life alongside the talented writer After reading this book it allows me to reconsider Fitzgerald's famous protagonists and find the underlying meaning of his novels which usually mirror in some fashion his beloved Zelda

  9. says:

Twisted couple twisted relationship and thus twisted book At first I though this is a waste of my time but in the end I found out a few things about Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald as a couple Little did I know about their relationship about their love and madness about their drinking problem this novels and her paintings his charm and her beauty and brought them together and in the same time torn them apart

  10. says:

A gorgeously written book with a point of view I truly appreciatedWe often times only get one side of this tumultuous relationship so it was just nice to get Zelda's point for onceThere was one thing that bothered me a little bit and that Hemingway was very clearly in this novel but the author decided to change his name but not do that with other characters That irritated me a bit and I didn't find any reason to way he could have done thatOtherwise I highly recommend this book
