He proposed but it was to her sisterAnd Eleanor was devastated because she was in love with him too Never again she vowed would she let herself become This old school 1978 Harleuin is still truly delightful Other than my cherished Betty Neels collection I culled most Harleuins and other OSR books about 20 years ago keeping only a handful of favorites although I haven t read any of them in years This one I m happy to say has held up well except that the hero is a chain smoker ick and I enjoyed it immenselyEleanor Ferrers name borrowedmodified from Jane Austen is the daughter of a Yorkshire vicar She is in London to stay with the Mansel family Mrs Mansel being an old friend of Eleanor s mother Eleanor had fallen in love with Guy Slade who when he was introduced to her family promptly fell in love with Eleanor s younger sister Kate Hence the sojourn in London to soothe her bruised heartThe Mansel family are in the antiues and arts business and consists of the Mr and Mrs as well as Edward and Vanessa Edward has a reputation as uite a playboy and is tall dark handsome and sardonic Vanessa is younger just slightly older than Eleanor and at first seems rather flighty but turns out to be uite nice Also there is a good friend of Edward s who is often around named HughKate comes to London with her future in laws to purchase her trousseau Not only does she overspend her allowance by 80 she drops hints that Eleanor is rather permanently ensconced in the Mansel family as a potential bride if Edward When she panics about the money she runs to Eleanor to fix everythingSo Eleanor secretly gets a waitress job to earn the money but Edward becomes suspicious and has her followed He insists on paying Kate s bill and when Eleanor is determined to pay him back suggests she work in the antiues shopThen at Vanessa s birthday ball Mrs Mansel suggests that Edward and Eleanor make their announcement Like in the game Telephone the hint has grown into an engagement Edward and Eleanor agree to a pretend engagement to be broken off at some future date so as not to embarrass their familiesSince the reader sees Eleanor s POV exclusively we know that she is in love with Edward although she hasn t admitted it to herself yet We also get some hints that perhaps Edward isn t entirely play acting either he gives her a ruby engagement ring in an antiue setting and comments that rubies seem appropriate and proverbs about rubiesIn the meantime Vanessa is involved in a plane crash small private craft and injured although not seriously Just enough to cause Hugh to declare his intentions toward Vanessa and they become engaged Eleanor while working at the shop has adopted a stray tortoiseshell cat that she calls Henry When Henry goes missing she searches for him and falls down the cellar steps knocking herself out Edward finds her there And Henry turns out to be Mrs Henry because she is found hiding in a cupboard with 6 kittensBoth couples have been invited to a house party by a wishes she wasn t former flame of Edward s While trying to sleep Eleanor decides to get some water to take a sleeping pill and happens to see Edward going into Felicity s bedroom She is distraught and slaps Edward She tells him she doesn t want him to accompany her to Yorkshire to attend Kate s wedding and he agreesBut he shows up anyway And when someone lets it slip that he had been to visit her parents 5 weeks ago she is even puzzled He sends her a message to meet him in her father s study where he tells her that he loves her and wants to marry her for reals And he was only in Felicity s bedroom to appraise an antiue clock I ve left out lots of delightful details mainly concerning Eleanor s youngest sister Dodie who is really adorable Eleanor could very easily be a Betty heroine except for one scene with Edward where they acknowledge Brighton s existence whilst remaining uite a distance away Or to use a baseball metaphor they linger around first base and probably near the vicinity of second base they get caught in a rundown the telephone rings and interrupts themI m glad this one was on my keeper shelf all these years
