Mending Fences by Sherryl Woods is a 2016 Mira publication I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review This book was originally published back in 2007 but will be reissued by Mira with a new updated cover and will be available in digital format Neighbors Marcie and Emily have been very good friends for almost a decade going through life’s ups and downs and changes while raising their children who were also very close with one another However when Marcie’s son Evan a football star is accused of date rape secrets come light that will test their friendship in ways they never could have imagined Is there any possible way their friendship can weather the storm or are the circumstances too painful to overcome? This story takes on a disturbing topic we grapple with every day which is bad enough but when your best friend’s son is the accused? What if your daughter began acting strangely leading you think she knows something about the situation she’s been keeping to herself? This is a powerful and emotional story that dares to tackle an uncomfortable issue but is written with a deftness that draws the reader toward the relationships and family ties that are at the heart of the matter There is a lot to absorb in this novel and will give the reader a great deal to think about I was happy about the way some things worked out and a little disappointed by others but in the end I was proud of all the characters in the story although a few of them will bear a tremendous burden for many years to come I think we left them all in a good place and on the right path Overall this is a very thought provoking and compelling read recommended to those enjoy contemporary fiction or women’s fiction 4 stars

Note this book was originally written in 2007 and re released in 2016What a page turner Marcie and Emily are best friends; they have been neighbors for years and their kids are practically siblings But when Marcie's older son and scouted college football player is accused of date rape the families face a lot of clashing Marcie's husband is determined to do whatever he can to protect his son including mudslinging the victim and Emily is finding it tough to connect the dots between the kid who spent so much time in her house to the college man who could have committed this crime Evan's crime brings many weaknesses between the families and within each family to light including bad behavior from Marcie's husband and a secret in Emily's family that changes everythingThis is heavy shit and I thought Sherryl handled this subject matter very well Marcie's conversation with Evan about consent how scared a rape victim is to report this happening and for some how hard it is to tell the truth about difficult things when it also affects other people you love It's a tangled web and just as everything does these days it made me think a lot about the election The brave women who stood up and told the truth about DT's sexual assault history and who know have to see him as our president for the next four years It made me sick before it's unbelievable really Anyway there's a subtle romance included in the book too that I really liked More than anything this book is about two women in their 40s who need to dig way down and find the ultimate amount of strength to do what's best for them and their families They are faced with awful conundrums and being two woman with very different priorities and beliefs I admired their friendship and all the honesty that came along with itKeywords family date rape college aged kids family friends investigations

I applaud Sherryl Woods for dealing with the difficult subject of date rape in this novel Not entirely happy with the plot but so good to be bringing light to this tragic situation that happens far too often

Written before the #METOO movement this affecting story examines what happens when a date rape occurs and the young man Emily Dobbs has thought of as her second son is accused Does her son know anything? Why has her daughter's behavior changed toward the family that lives just beyond the backyard hedge? And how is it possible that Marcie's son could have done this? The detectives who ask uestions suspect that Emily's daughter Dani knows something but if a pattern of behavior cannot be identified Evan could go free When Josh gives them the names of other girls he knows Evan has dated they hope they'll have the information they need to send him to prison Dani goes to see the victim without tell her mother where she's gone resulting in grounding but she refuses to say what she knows until the pressure to keep the secret becomes too muchWhat will her parents do now? Does she have the courage to tell the detective? She likes him and wants her divorced mother to keep seeing him but what will her coming clean do to her friendship with Evan's sister?Friendships are as important in this story as are the other relationships that are explored If you're looking for easy answers to a difficult uestion this book is not for you But if you want to explore along with these flawed and interesting characters the many permutations of an all too realistic situation open this book and dive in You won't regret it
