'JJ Sila kuripugal' starts as a tamil writer's obsession with a fictitious malayalam writer 'JJ' But soon the reader will realise that the book is not about JJ at all JJ is a tool that the author uses to explore a wide range of philosophical themes emotions and experiences Pretense This is one of the themes that recur at many places in the book Balu talk about his childhood with his sister where they pretended a wooden doll to be a baby and took care of it He also talks about pretending to hear his father's encounter with JJ as if it were the first time while his father pretended to tell as if it were the first time Balu hearing it Pretense is powerful It lets you put a curtain on the truth Have we not pretended to get angry with our loved ones only to seek love and affection? Have we not pretended pain when a child hits us to induce empathy in it? Truth can be boring and sometimes painful Take JJ for example he had a spy glass to explore everything around him Be it his mother or his lover he scrutinized everything seeking truth in it It only brought him misery JJ was aware of it He says 'what is the point of truth if you have lost everything in life?' in his diary Yet he refuses to change his mind This stark contrast between Balu and JJ is striking May be Balu is pretending to be obsessed with JJ without even realising it But that is not the point Truth is nothing What you believe to be truth is everythingThe spectrum of emotions that the book unleashes upon you can not be articulated by words Still I want to try and put it into words One of the emotions that the author explores through JJ is the restlessness of a troubled mind The inability and helplessness to cope with the randomness and uncertainty of life can make an atheist cower before god Again JJ is too adamant to do so He doesn't want answers and hence he rejects the two possibilities that there is or isn't a god Believing or rejecting god would mean that he has reached a conclusion and JJ knows very well that the conclusion does not make any sense if you try to build reasoning and arguments upon it So JJ wants to believe in two other posibilities 1 There might be god 2 There might not be god This lets him conveniently avoid reaching a conclusion and keep looking forever Even this did not let JJ make peace He fails constantly in his uest for trying to grab onto something in life He sees only a dark future ahead I should remind you that he feels all these while he has a loving wife and a beautiful child While these emotions make you rage within yourself there is a certain calming tone in the narrative The author describes the sunrise as the blood that oozes out of your finger nails JJ is surrounded by people who really care about him Aravindaksha Menon for example How many people do we have in life who cares about our philosophical struggles and how they might affect our personal life? This mixture of emotions is sprinkled throughout the book In the end it leaves you with a raging calmness and you start searching why

This book JJ sila Kurippugal JJ Some Jottings is one of most celebrated novels in Tamil literature From what I know this is the first ever post modernist tamil novel It destroys all the formats of novel writing Part one is like prologue for the part 2 As per the novel the narrator Balu a tamil writer wanted to translate the diary notes of a modernist Malayalam writer Joseph Joice JJhe was able to procure Whole first part is about how Balu knows about JJ and who are all he met for writing the book about him The second part is the translation of Diary Notes of JJWhile reading the book you would never think it's a fiction It is so real that many still arguing the narrator Balu is none but the authorSundara Ramasami himself and the JJ is actually the famous malayalam writer CJ Thomas I am not sure how much of it is trueBut one thing is sure this book definitely destroys all the things you would think of a novel and makes you wonder whether a novel can be written like this also A great work Now I could realise why Sandara ramasami is considered as a master of modern tamil writings and why this book is being referred as a milestone in changing the style of tamil writing in many ways

This was recommended to me years ago by a friend yet it took a long time for me to read this Somewhere deep down I could not recognize JJ as a fictional character right from the beginning For there are several people who are strong willed identified as arrogant and often misunderstood in every area of arts

After reading rave reviews about this novel I gave it a try This was a very difficult book to comprehend and to get the ideaThis novel takes the form of Brief Notes of a writer's remembrance of another writer JJJeethu Joseph aka JJ is a fictional author dramatist and amateur artist but Sundara ramaswamy takes so much efforts by making him a character of flesh and bonesThis novel contains precious gems of passages and the end part which is described as the translation of JJ's diary shines the bestVery different attempt Makes a dent in Tamil literary Circle
