I kept running across this novel in the secondary literature I've been reading about women's colleges in the early 20th century so I decided it was time to just read it for myself It reuired a special trip to the NYPL's reading room and a dedicated sit down and was almost worth it Since I doubt any of you will also go to the library expressly to read this I'm just going to spoil the ending Written in 1928 the novel defines a new sort of feminism and explores how women can be independent smart and self sufficient The protagonist is Nora Denning a shy reserved young woman who finds her calling in the study of modern history The book follows her from high school through the early years of her career as she establishes herself as a gifted scholar While in England on a research trip she meets and falls in love with a married man with congestive heart failure He's her soulmate and he dies She's devastated and realizes she will never love again She returns to her college and is appointed Dean of the College Early in her tenure one of her students comes to withdraw she's pregnant Nora arranges a leave of absence for the girl rather than kick her out a stunning kindness in the early 20th century when most other women would have had to leave college in disgrace Ultimately Nora decides to adopt the baby boy when it becomes apparent that the student wants nothing to do with the child Okay so here's my beef The novel is progressive in so many ways for its time a protagonist who is an independent minded woman who has sex outside of marriage and who is appointed dean of the college at a time when not many women college professors attained leadership positions And yet the novel ends with Nora adopting a child The reader is left with the impression that because Nora is now a mother she is a fulfilled woman All of her accomplishments might have been well and good but women are meant to nurture and raise children if they are to be true women ARGH UGH And sadly I don't think this idea has lost credence in American society at all in the 80 years since the novel was written
